Movie reviews of Sivaji, Vacancy and synopsis of Mr Brooks, Licence to Wed and Curse of the Golden Flower

Sivaji (The Boss) (Showing at , The Zone – Rosebank; Cavendish Square – Cape Town; Gateway and Suncoast Casino)

Starring:  Rajinikanth, Shriya Saran, Vivek, Prakashraj, Manivannan

I

t has been a while since Ster Kinekor has screened  movies which have emerged from the South of India – this is about to change! Sivaji  (The Boss) is a perfect example of East meeting West – it has all the usual eastern ingredients of song, dance, love, drama and more while parodying some of the more popular western films – a cause of much mirth.

With elements taken from ‘Desperado’ , ‘The Matrix’ and ‘Kung Fu Hustle’ among others Sivaji takes the audience on a hilarious journey with a man who has been educated in America and has high hopes of establishing a university in his home town. However, when it is established that he wants to provide free education to the masses he meets with much opposition.

This Tamil film with English sub-titles shows how Sivaji (Rajinikanth) has to bribe his way to the top eventually emerging as a ‘mafia-type’ boss complete with parody. Keeping on the lighter side is the way he inveigles his way into Tamilselvi’s heart (Shriya). Well worth watching (AW)

Licence to Wed

Starring: Mandy Moore, John Krasinski, Robin Williams, Christine Taylor

N

ewly engaged, Ben Murphy (John Krasinski) and Sadie Jones (Mandy Moore) can’t wait to start their life together and live happily ever after. The problem is that Sadie’s family church, St. Augustine’s, is run by Reverend Frank (Robin Williams), who won’t bless Ben and Sadie’s union until they pass his patented, “foolproof” marriage prep course. Consisting of outrageous classes, outlandish homework assignments and some outright invasion of privacy, Reverend Frank’s rigorous curriculum puts Ben and Sadie’s relationship to the test. Forget happily ever after—do they even have what it takes to make it to the altar?

Mr Brooks

Starring: Kevin Costner, Dane Cook, Demi Moore, William Hurt

E

arl Brooks (Costner) has it all: a loving wife (Marg Helgenberger) and devoted daughter (Danielle Panabaker), community standing, and his own thriving business. Mr. Brooks, however, lives another life, unknown to anyone else. He is also the notorious serial murderer branded as The Thumbprint Killer. Though recently inactive, his pathological compulsion is inflamed once again by his cunning, wicked alter ego (Academy Award® winner William Hurt), whom Mr. Brooks faults for his transgressions. But succumbing to one more malevolent urge to murder an unsuspecting couple, Mr. Brooks commits his first mistake--he is observed by a peeping Tom photographer (Dane Cook), who chooses to blackmail him with a bizarre demand. This last crime, though, also unleashes a tenacious detective (Demi Moore) whose own personal crisis drives her furiously to solve the identity of the Thumbprint Killer, putting her on Mr. Brooks’ trail.
Now, for the first time, Mr. Brooks faces the endgame -- unless he can continue to conceal his shocking secret life, and his true identity forever.

Vacancy

Starring: Kate Beckinsale, Luke Wilson, Frank Whaley, Ethan Embry

I

magine being stranded in the middle of nowhere. The car has broken down, you aren’t exactly on good terms with your partner and the only choice of accommodation is a ramshackle motel. David (Wilson) and Amy (Beckinsale) are in this exact predicament. Whether it is urban legend or not, one almost expects to find a rather creepy motel manager but their situation is exacerbated even further when they discover that the low-budget videos they find in their room were actually filmed in that exact location – each featuring a murder. To say more will be to give the movie away suffice to say they have to find any way they can to escape while every move of theirs is being watched. It’s guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat! (AW)

The Curse of the Golden Flower – Cinema Nouveau

Starring: Qin Junjie, Chow Yun Fat, Ni Dahong, Liu Ye

T

he follow-up to his instant classics, Hero and The House Of Flying Daggers, this film sees Zhang once again take the wuxia form to new highs, and present images of unparalleled beauty on the screen. Political machinations unfold in the court of Emperor Ping's court: the Emperor and his Empress Phoenix are at loggerheads, and the Empress begins to suspect that the medicine the Emperor forces upon her is actually poison. The Empress, through various means, courts the favours of the Emperor's sons, and the scene is set for a beautifully bloody conclusion. Mandarin with English subtitles
