The headline fundraiser is the Workrider’s Charity Race where six grooms will take the hot seat and race to raise funds for the charities. The Western Province Owners and Trainers Association (WPOTA) has donated a sum of R40,000 which will be split three ways between these charities. The riders haven’t been forgotten and cash prizes amounting to at least R11,700 donated by L’Ormarins, WPOTA and the Western Province Grooms School will acknowledge their involvement in this charitable race and works they perform throughout the year.
In supporting The Equine Trust the funds are raised to assist former jockeys, grooms as well as race horses put out to pasture. Although horses may retire from racing, they still need the love and care they had during their heyday and the Trust ensures that their twilight years are pleasant and that neglect is non-existent.
The funds raised during the expected festivities will also ensure that these “community” horses are cared for and that the families whose livelihoods depend on these valiant animals, are educated and supported themselves.
The horse and cart as a means of transport and income generation was an integral part of life for many previously disadvantaged communities living in Cape Town. The Cart Horse Protection Association regulates and subsidises over 500 working cart horses and ensures they are properly cared for.
Western Province Grooms School Trust is a successful Grooms School is run at the Philippi and Milnerton Training Centres, and courses in literacy and horse and stable management are provided, to educate those employed within the racing industry.
The L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate is highly regarded amongst the race going fraternity, as it is the form race for the Met, some six weeks later. This being the case, as well as the exciting opportunities on offer to both corporates and the social set, this years’ event should encourage a good attendance and therefore a sporting chance at raising the funds so needed by all of these organisations. |
