One of the Celebrate Durban regular events is the creative writing and story telling module which happens in the tranquil calm of the Durban Botanical Gardens coordinated by Deena Nair from the Libraries Dept.
This year there will be a quiz competition on 28 August at the Visitors Centre; a Storytelling Competition on Monday 15 September at the Visitors Centre; a Storytelling Festival on Wednesday 17 September alongside the lake and Creative Writing Awards alongside the lake on Tuesday 23 September. All events start at 9am.
Entry: Entrance is free and all are welcome to the Storytelling festival on Wed 17 Sep. Other events by invitation only.

Dancing Pencils Literary Development’s vision is to build a strong literate sub-Saharan region and to unearth local authors – nine provinces will be involved this year.
Their two-day sessions will launch new books by adult authors in English and Zulu and children’s books by established and first time writers. Felicity Keats will be launching her new book, “I do not think, therefore I am” on Saturday afternoon. They are also giving packs of books to selected rural schools.

Celebrate life, Celebrate our history

An interactive history competition inspired by Mandela’s birthday which “Celebrates life and celebrates our history.”
The competition, which has prizes to the value of R120 000, is open to primary school and secondary school learners and the public. Schools from greater Durban have been encouraged to participate.
Entrants are invited to present the history of anything South African – their family, church, soccer club, school etc. Entries must have a written and a practical / display component.
The process culminates in an exhibition on 24 and 25 of the winning entries in each category with the prize giving on 25 October. The project which is hosted by the Chatsworth Youth Centre, the Umlazi History Forum and the Sadyagraha (the Gandhi organization) is in partnership with participating libraries throughout KZN where entry forms can be collected.

Durban Natural Science Museum - Time Capsule

In Celebration of its 120 year anniversary the Natural Science Museum will bury a time capsule with instructions to be opened in another 120 years time. Some of the items to be included are a message from the current Mayor to the Mayor and residents of eThekwini in 120 years time, Red Data Book of all the endangered species and some messages from school children and members of the public.

12th Poetry Africa

More than 20 poets, predominantly from South Africa and elsewhere on the African continent, will participate in an extensive week-long programme that includes performances, readings, music and book-launches Monday to Friday at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre (University of KwaZulu-Natal) with a festival finale at BAT Centre on Saturday 4 October. Day activities include seminars, workshops, poetry competitions, poetry in prison, open mic opportunities, and school visits.
