This year, entrants were invited to design and create a prototype of a FRAME, which could be broadly interpreted. “I encouraged entrants to be inspired by a moment, a memory, or something special they share with someone close while designing and creating their prototypes, creating an original product that reflects their uniqueness”, says Boyes, convenor and judge of the competition.
From hard geometric lines to elegantly crafted and original designs made from materials such as metal, stainless steel, shells, perspex, paper maché, wood and bronze, the finalists’ entries display the flair and talent required by leading designers.
During the past couple of months, FRAME entry forms, posters, flyers and DVDs were distributed to libraries, art and craft centres, street vendor collectives and tertiary education institutions across the country. Word of the initiative spread like wildfire, the result - 250 entries received from all over South Africa. “It’s awe-inspiring to experience the dedication and enthusiasm that the loyal METAL entrants have, we’re very lucky to have such a fantastic following of creative and talented designers” says Boyes.
METAL 2008 is the fourth annual New Designer Search pioneered by Carrol Boyes Functional Art. Every year, Carrol Boyes, arguably one of South Africa's most commercially successful product designers, invites aspiring designers to submit a three-dimensional prototype based on a particular theme.
A great response was had from tertiary institutions - despite exam pressures experienced by students over this time - with 68 entries being received from students from institutions all over South Africa. It was also encouraging to see so many creative designers who are employed full time - not necessarily in the design field - entering the competition. This is a refreshing expression of their commitment to add value to the design industry - of the finalists chosen, an impressive 14 hail from Western Cape, 3 from Gauteng and 1 from the Free State and KwaZulu-Natal.
“The winning design will show a mature and creative interpretation of the theme as well as an understanding of the balance between aesthetics and functionality – neither should take priority,” says Boyes, who is seeking fresh and original talent, clearly reflected in her choice of winners from 2007.
The three award winners will be announced at the end of October and the winning design stands the chance of being manufactured by Carrol Boyes Functional Art, distributed and sold in her stores, nationally and internationally - a firm base upon which to build a successful career in design.
Carrol Boyes invites the public to view the top designs from this year’s entries at the METAL 2008 exhibition, at her flagship store in the Waterfront, Cape Town, until 12 October 2008.
With titles such as Equilibrium, Zig Zag, Evolvolution, Embrace Beauty and Moisi, design lovers and enthusiasts can expect to see an interesting combination of the country’s first rate up-and-coming designers in this year’s exhibition.
