Movie: Bolt - a 3D cinematic adventure
by Ailsa Windsor
27 December 2008

Bolt is a dog with an identity crisis. He believes he is an action hero and doesn’t realise that it’s all make believe. Lovely 3D action for the entire family which opened on South African screens on Boxing Day (26 December)

Starring the voices of: John Travolta, Miley Cyrus, Susie Essman, Mark Walton

Seeing a movie in 3D add an extra dimension to the cinematic experience, but for children it must be even more exciting as it all seems to be within touching distance.

However, as for the viewer it is merely an illusion so it is for Bolt who is the star of a hit TV show. He truly believes that he is capable of amazing feats – as do all super heroes. When he is accidentally removed from the set and enters the real world then the ‘fun’ begins.

And so begins his long 'trek' to return to his owner and co-star Penny (voiced by Miley Cyrus). Along the way he meets Mittens – an abandoned housecat as well as a TV-obsessed hamster (and Bolt-super-fan) named Rhino.

This becomes a journey of discovery for Bolt who comes to realise that to be a hero isn’t all about fancy stunts.

According to the production notes, the film’s director - Chris Williams was hand-picked by John Lasseter, the Chief Creative officer of Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios as well as Principal Creative Advisor for Walt Disney Imagineering.

“I felt that there was a great potential to create really rich characters—that’s sort of our overall goal as filmmakers.  We thought we could come up with a trio that the audience could spend a lot of time with.  And I really feel that we did that.  For me personally, I’m just excited to be working at Disney under John Lasseter—you really want to make a movie for him.  He’s the best boss you could possibly have in animation.  He’s very engaged and involved, and feels passionately about any film that comes out of Disney or Pixar, says Chris.

John met with the filmmakers once a week, if not more, to offer his invaluable advice in every area as the project progressed.  Chris quips, “Pixar movies aren’t consistently great by accident.”

‘Bolt’ is an ideal outing for the entire family over this festive season.
