Voodoo Child launches début CD
by Ailsa Windsor
19 May 2009

On a recent trip to Cape Town under the MTN Xploaded banner Voodoo Child proved that it is a band with which to be reckoned and is already making waves on the South African music scene

June is set to be an Xplosive month for the members of Voodoo Child as their début CD “Attack don’t Panic” hits the music stores.

This is a South African band which, in my opinion, is as good as if not better than many who have reached the international charts. With a wide range of musical influences Voodoo Child is able to cater for all genres within one performance, moving seamlessly from one song to another.

The band comprises Lebo (vocals), Al (song writing, keys), Brendon (song writing, vocals & guitars), Fuzz (bass) and Hendrik (drums). ‘We’re unique as we mix funk, hip-hop and rock into our performances. We make the music we like,’ says Alan.  It has taken us time to find out what we like, but each member contributes to the songs.

‘Most bands have a writer, but we work our songs – it’s an amalgamation which needs all five of us. Often the original concept doesn’t resemble the end product.’ Having spent a year working on their first album, the guys are thrilled with the result.

Influences

Lebo: Soul, R&B, hip-hop, funk – Bob Marley, Shaun Wilson

Hendrik: Funk, heavy rock, electronic, funk, progressive rock, indie – Jamiroquai, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Muse, Tool

Al: Alanis Morisette, Lauren Hill, Skunk Anansie

Brendon:  Foreigner, Janis Joplin, Sheryl Crow

To my mind, however, there is definitely a touch of the Spin Doctors and Glam Rock. As they say: ‘Everything has to revolve around song’.

Do yourselves a favour, track down this Gauteng-based band - you’re destined to become a fan!
