Giorgia Fumanti: an Italian who sings from her heart
by Ailsa Windsor
20 November 2006

For Giorgia Fumanti who is currently promoting her CD ‘From My Heart’ singing is a passion. GoingPlaces made the most of the opportunity to chat to her while on a flying visit to South Africa to promote her new CD under the auspices of EMI

‘From My Heart’ is not just a collection of songs,’ said Giorgia. ‘The songs are from diverse sources and each one is special. I want to sing for the people and share my emotions.’ And that is what the CD is all about. Her magnificent voice relays her passion.

But she never realised that she had the talent until she joined the church choir at the age of 17. ‘I never sang at home as a child, the only music came from my grandmother who used to sing to me before I went to bed. This used to calm me down and I could fall asleep. It was almost like ‘Sister Act’ I was so surprised to find that I could sing as a soprano.’

However, Giorgia does not sing classical opera. ‘Opera is beautiful to hear but very rigid – I need to be free to interpret,’ she said. ‘I follow my heart and my voice and need to be free to sing in my own way – I will leave opera for the great voices.’ Instead she focuses on the pop-classical hybrid even though she has had classical training at the Conservatory of Music in Italy.

Lyrics

‘From My Heart’ does not focus on songs which have her own lyrics but she hopes to be ‘more involved’ in the future.

South Africa

We are fortunate to be the first country in which ‘From My Heart’ has been released. Not only this but Giorgia has fallen in love with South Africa .. ‘I would like to bring my family to see the beauty of South Africa. ‘It’s a paradise,’ she said. ‘It’s my first visit and I love the nature of the people.’

Will we see her?… I certainly hope so! In January and February 2007 she will be touring the USA and then moving on to Europe and Asia – perhaps we’ll be next.
